Overview

The SECU Founding Story

In the summer of 1937, seventeen civil servants in Raleigh, North Carolina, came together with four hundred thirty-seven dollars in pooled savings to address a glaring issue in public service banking. Commercial banks across the state were failing to offer accessible, affordable credit to state employees, teachers, and municipal workers who maintained public infrastructure. Those seventeen founders established State Employees' Credit Union as a member-owned cooperative designed to keep savings within the civil service community and extend low-cost personal credit.

Nearly nine decades later, SECU remains anchored in that founding commitment to public servants. Employees across the credit union work with state workers, public school teachers, state troopers, healthcare professionals, and civil servants in all one hundred North Carolina counties. That deep alignment with public service translates into personal empathy and specialized knowledge of state payroll schedules, public employee benefits, and state retirement systems.

Platform & Operating Profile

State Employees' Credit Union operates as a state-chartered, member-owned financial cooperative regulated by the North Carolina Credit Union Division and federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). SECU manages over $55 billion in total assets and serves 3 million members, making it the second largest credit union in the nation. Its field of membership includes employees of the State of North Carolina, public school teachers, university staff, North Carolina National Guard members, state retirees, and their immediate family members.

Headquartered in Raleigh, North Carolina, SECU maintains an extensive branch network with over 270 physical locations, ensuring physical branch access across every single North Carolina county. This statewide branch density is paired with over 1,100 proprietary CashPoints® ATMs, comprehensive phone support centers, and cloud-native digital channels.

Products & Member Value Proposition

SECU delivers a complete portfolio of consumer deposits, home lending, personal credit lines, and financial advisory services tailored to the needs of North Carolina civil servants. On the lending side, SECU offers a flagship 100% First-Time Homebuyer Mortgage program requiring zero down payment and no private mortgage insurance (PMI). Additional credit solutions include competitive auto financing, personal open-end credit lines, and low-cost salary advance alternatives. Wealth management, trust administration, and estate planning services aligned with state pension structures are provided through SECU Financial Services.

Open Banking & Ecosystem Integration

SECU connects its statewide operational network with modern digital channels and open banking integrations. Through digital banking partnerships and open API frameworks, members can securely link their accounts with external financial tools and verification services without exposing login credentials.
