Overview

The PenFed Founding Story

In the spring of 1935, ten civilian government employees working in Washington, D.C., gathered with just ninety dollars in total capital. Operating in the wake of the Great Depression, these founders recognized that federal government personnel and military service members lacked access to reliable, fair credit. They formed Pentagon Federal Credit Union as a mutual cooperative where members could pool savings to extend low-cost personal credit to colleagues serving the nation.

Over nine decades later, PenFed has evolved into an international financial institution while preserving its commitment to service members, defense workers, and military families. Many PenFed team members are veterans and military dependents who bring personal understanding to member service. This military heritage informs PenFed's financial programs, ensuring tailored support during overseas deployments, permanent change of station moves, and transitions into civilian life.

Platform & Operating Profile

Pentagon Federal Credit Union operates as a member-owned, non-profit financial cooperative federally chartered and regulated by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). PenFed manages over $30 billion in total assets and serves 2.8 million members globally, positioning it as the nation's third largest federal credit union. While historically rooted in the military defense community, PenFed operates under an open field of membership, allowing anyone in the United States to join by opening a share savings account.

Headquartered in McLean, Virginia, PenFed maintains a global branch network alongside major service hubs in San Antonio, Texas, and Eugene, Oregon. PenFed operates physical branches across domestic military bases, regional financial centers, and overseas locations in Puerto Rico, Guam, and Okinawa. This physical footprint is supported by 24/7 global contact centers and digital banking infrastructure designed for international member support.
