Overview
The LMCU Founding Story
In October 1933, during the depth of the Great Depression, Grand Rapids schoolteacher Lloyd F. Hutt recognized that fellow educators were unable to secure fair personal loans or reliable savings accounts from traditional commercial banks. Hutt gathered 13 colleagues in his living room, pooled $90.50, and established the Grand Rapids Teachers Credit Union. The cooperative operated out of Hutt's home until 1959, when assets surpassed $1 million. Rebranded in 2002 as Lake Michigan Credit Union to reflect an expanding community footprint, LMCU grew into the top purchase mortgage lender in Michigan and expanded into Florida's Gulf Coast.
Platform & Operating Profile
LMCU operates as a state-chartered, member-owned financial cooperative regulated by the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS) and federally insured by the National Credit Union Administration (NCUA). Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Michigan, LMCU maintains more than 70 full-service branches across Michigan and Florida, supported by digital banking channels and 24/7 service infrastructure. Its field of membership includes anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Michigan's Lower Peninsula or the state of Florida, immediate family members of current account holders, or anyone nationwide who joins via a $5 non-profit partner contribution.
